Non-Traditional Partnership
Turns Open Space into a Community Destination.
Lynden Hill is a three-acre
open space in the Midtown neighborhood in center-city
Milwaukee. In a city with little topographical relief,
Lynden Hill, with woodland at the summit, is visually
compelling. Community residents used to walk across
the park to get to other places. The Lynden Hill
Partnership is making the Hill, a destination.
The
Lynden Hill Partnership succeeds because each partner
brings complementary resources and skills to achieve
shared goals as follows:
- America's
Outdoors provides funding for environmental
education.
- Midtown Neighborhood
Association assures resident participation.
- Growing Power
brings experience in youth organizing.
- Urban Open Space
Foundation, with a grant from the Milwaukee
Foundation, provides funding for planting and
stewardship.
- Friends of Lynden
Hill will provide long-term site management.
- University of Wisconsin,
Dept. of Landscape Architecture provided design
and graphic support.
- Havenwoods State
Forest and Environmental Awareness Center
brings experience in environmental education.
- Wisconsin DNR, State
Forestry brings expertise in urban tree management.
- USDA Natural Resource
Conservation Service provides soil analysis where
needed.
- Milwaukee High School
of the Arts, adjacent to the hill, promotes student
involvement.
The
Lynden Hill Partnership continues to evolve, bringing
in additional partners from the Midtown neighborhood.
The current collective focus is on constructing
an Urban Tree House for environmental education
and a Gateway to the Hill.
