The green infrastructure
efforts of the City of Kenosha led by the work of
Mayor John Antaramian, City Administrator Nick Arnold,
and City Planner Ray Forgianni have brought about a
higher quality of life to the residents of Kenosha.
Their efforts to transform brownfields to green
infrastructure with the HarborPark redevelopment
project demonstrates their vision.
HarborPark is a 69-acre
redevelopment on the lakefront site of a former AMC-Jeep
factory. The site is bounded by downtown Kenosha, Lake
Michigan, and the Southport Marina that blends park
and open space development with a new public museum,
new residential housing, and a planned commercial
district. With extensive community input, the HarborPark plan provides high quality public
envir onmental interaction with year-round lakefront
enjoyment including a public gathering space,
residential housing, public transportation via a
trolley system, pedestrian and biking paths, and
downtown access with linkages to the Kenosha Public
Museum and the Kenosha History Center.
The HarborPark redevelopment
was brought about through the leadership of these men
and other key player, and is an excellent example of a
community-driven and inclusive process. Partnering
with Chrysler and the Urban Land Institute, the city
conducted two city-wide public forums and numerous
staff presentations during the planning and economic
development initiative to ensure that the plan
accurately represented the community's desires. The
redevelopment provides connected, diverse, and
engaging green infrastructure to local residents.
HarborPark is an inspiring
achievement for open space planning within the City of
Kenosha, but these three men have continued their
efforts in learning about and finding funding for
brownfield remediation at the former Frost Company and
Outokumpu Copper sites. Through their determination to
improve life for Kenosha's residents they have
converted blighted landscapes and brownfields into
beautiful green jewels of the community.
