Crucial Land Acquisition
Keeps Vision of a Central Park Alive.
On the east Isthmus, within
a few blocks of the state Capital, is a mile-long
former railroad yard and factory district. Incorporating
neighborhood plans and work of 20th century visionary
John Nolen, the Urban Open Space Foundation's
vision transforms a 172 acre manufacturing area
with brownfields and under utilized land into a
vibrant open space-housing-commercial corridor.
UOSP is partnering directly with the City of Madison
to achieve the vision.
The launch of this shared
vision depended on the ability of the Urban Open
Space Foundation to raise the first $600.000 to
save a critical land parcel of land from development.
Expressing its commitment to an economically vital
city, the Evjue Foundation, charitable arm of the
Capital Times, provided funds to purchase the land.
This key land acquisition
now becomes the cornerstone of an initiative that
responds to citizens' recreational needs, local
and regional economic issues, and broad social development
goals. It is a smart growth initiative, providing
an alternative to edge-city growth. Above all, it
is an initiative in which a park will be catalyst
for substantial redevelopment, shaping the city
for generations to come.

Urban Open Space Foundation

Rail Village project.
