"I have a feeling I volunteered
for this before I was born."
Marge Pitts came to the Urban
Open Space Foundation (UOSF) because of
her personal interest in Troy Community Gardens. In
addition to being an avid gardener, Marge is a writer,
waiter, dog person, aviculturist and volunteer for
the Aids Network.
Marge has been involved in Troy
Gardens since community residents, a coalition of
non-profits and the University of Wisconsin came together
to preserve the property as community open space.
During the past five years, Marge has been tenacious
in looking at proposals for the Troy property in terms
of how they affect existing community use of the land.
She is equally tenacious in insisting on a process
that allows community input, consensus, education,
and personal expression.
In addition to long-term
involvement in planning and implementation of a community
vision for Troy Gardens, Marge writes and does desktop
publishing for various garden programs. She claims
the roots of her determination and willingness to
volunteer are in a notion she knows people may consider
romantic. I have to be true to what I love. I wanted
to save the world, so I planted my feet where I stood
and started there. The alternative to working toward
this vision is despair, which I am not brave enough
to face.
